Anxiety is such a troublesome emotion to deal with. Constantly ‘what ifs’ flood your mind, along with worst case scenarios and past mistakes.
God calls us not to be anxious! As someone who deals with a Panic and Anxiety Disorder, this is something that I really struggle with.
As Christians, we are called not to be anxious, yet…. do you know of a person who isn’t?
The reason that God doesn’t want us to be anxious is because the things we are worrying about are things that He has already taken care of. When we spend our time worrying about outcomes, we aren’t spending our time praising, giving thanks, and living in the moment.
We aren’t in control. No amount of worrying about the future will change that.
When you think about where most of your anxiety centers, think about the WHY.
For example, most of my anxiety centers around work. I’m a teacher, and my job is a place where I am responsible for these precious lives for 7 hours straight. Im responsible for protecting them, caring for them and teaching them. That’s A LOT of pressure!
For those of us in the Eating Disorder Recovery community, your major stressor might be food. What about it makes you SO anxious? For me, it was the physical sensations associated with food- the hunger, the fullness and the textures. For some, it might be the thoughts that come after you eat that you have to fight. Knowing that they are coming might make you anxious about being anxious!
When anxiety starts to come over you, in that moment, we have a choice. We can fight back our thoughts, or we can choose to follow them.
Fighting back our thoughts with Godly wisdom is the real way to win the battle against anxiety.
In treatment, I made notecards, and I read them to myself when things started getting hard. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had just created my first set of affirmations. I hope that this set of affirmations can help you stop those anxious thoughts and refocus your mind on who is really in control: God!
