Eating Disorder Recovery- Distraction- The Story of Martha and Mary

Luke 10: 41- “Martha Mathas,” The Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things.”

If you haven’t heard the story of Mary and Martha from the New Testament, you should go and read it now! Its in Luke Chapter 10. Basically, its a story about a girl who is distracted by making sure everything is perfect for Jesus being in her home (Martha) and a girl who just wants to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn (Mary).

From that short description you can probably already guess if you are a Mary or a Martha. I would say, for the most part, the women reading this book might identify as Marthas. There is a driving need for perfection, and for everything to be right, and for others to help us and listen to us. But at our core we would love to give up caring about all of that stuff and be Mary’s. We would love to just sit with Jesus, without another worry.

Eating Disorder Recovery- Distraction- The Story of Mary and Martha- Verse

The issue with Mary is that she was distracted by all of the other things in her life except the most important one, which was Jesus sitting in her home. Her mind was on the future (her to-do list for her home), and on past regrets (not getting her home prepared in time). She was living anywhere but in the moment.

The Devil distracts us from what is right in front of our eyes often. He not only distracts us with the future and the past, but also with others, such as anger towards someone.

Eating Disorder Recovery- Living in the present

We have to understand, that to fight ED, to fight anxiety and depression, that we are fighting a mental battle against the devil and all of his distraction techniques. I think a lot of us get caught up in trying to fight this battle ourselves. We are not meant to fight it ourselves. We are meant to lean on Jesus, who is always right with us. We are meant to talk to our Father about what our issues are, what is distracting us, what is holding us back. Fighting an ED alone is exhausting, both mentally and physically. Don’t get distracted by the devil. Look up towards the Father and ask Him to fight the battles with you. I promise that He will.
