Want to start at Day 1 of my Eating Disorder Recovery?
Galatians 1:10- “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ”
Separate yourself from your ED, anxiety, depression, or OCD for a second. What do you want? Not what your ED wants, or any of the other conditions. But you. How do you want to live your life? What is your vision for your future? Do you want to travel, to have a family, a job, stability, relationships?
Too often, we are trying to win the approval of others, to impress others, or to compare ourselves to others so much that we miss out on what we want out of our own lives. We care so much about what other people are thinking about us, that we don’t pause to think about what God (and our true selves!) is thinking about our actions. It makes sense. The people that are around us, we can see with our own two eyes. God, we can’t see.
Your TRUE self, away from these mental health issues, wants you to be better, wants you to be successful, and most importantly wants you to do right in your Father’s eyes.
Ask yourself if what you are doing in your life right now- your behaviors, your thoughts, and your relationships- are lining up with how God wants you to live your life. Make a list of what you are doing, saying, thinking, and then write what God would say to that. God would NEVER shame you, but He does have a different thought about all of it than your ED does. Start making it your goal to live your life according to God’s pleasure.
Let me be clear, God loves you, no matter if you are actively engaging in an ED or not. If you have anxiety, depression or OCD or not. GOD LOVES YOU! But He wants you to have a fulfilling life on earth, living out your purpose in His will. Your purpose is not to have an eating disorder, to worry constantly about your appearance, or to make others like you. Your purpose is SO much more than that. You think that this ED makes you happy? Or if you were just a bit skinnier, then you would be happy? That’s a lie that the enemy is telling you right now. What’s going to bring you true happiness is God’s approval over your life, knowing that you are no longer living according to the enemy’s lies but to God’s true promises.
Pleasing others won’t make you happy. Doing things just to please others will just make you sad, overwhelmed and anxious. Please God with everything that you do today, from your behaviors, to your thoughts, to your words. Be a servant of Christ today.
And a little side note: People are not thinking about you as much as you think they are. So next time that your brain thinks that someone is judging you, most likely they are thinking about their dog at home, or their drive home after work. Not everyone is looking at you all the time, nor do people care what you are doing all the time. I think that we get so caught up in this ‘everyone is watching me’ thought that is just so untrue. They are not watching you, waiting to judge you.
*I am not a licensed counselor, therapist or doctor. If you suspect you or a loved one has an eating disorder please see a doctor as soon as possible.
