2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Is ‘good enough’ good for you? Or do you have to have perfection all the time? Often, our Eating Disorder or addiction screams at us that we aren’t doing enough, that we aren’t good enough, or that we can’t handle everything that life is throwing at us. We walk around, feeling like we are failures because we aren’t perfect. Our idea of what is perfect defines everything we do and drives all of our behaviors.

While all Eating Disorders and addictions are different, and we are all on our different journey’s, I think that these thoughts may be something that we have in common.

God called us to purpose, not perfection.  In our weaknesses, and in our human failures, that’s where God is powerful. Learning that we can’t do this life on our own, that we need support, that we need help is all part of the journey to a recovered life. God is that help, that hope and that support system that is vital to our recovery. Learning to lean on Him, and turn to Him when things are hard instead of trying to make it perfect ourselves shows us God’s power in our lives.

God loves you no matter what, whether you are living in recovery or not. But if you let Him, God can use this battle that you fight everyday to show his power. If you can stop worrying about the perfect and instead focus on the purpose that God has for your journey, then you can start to heal.

With our eating disorder or addiction, a lot of us are looking for healing in some way. We may even feel like practicing these behaviors is ‘healing us’. We are trying to be perfect for the perfectionist in our minds. If we just do our behaviors perfectly, then life will be perfect. What a ‘perfect’ lie the enemy has made us believe!

God works in this messy and imperfect world to show his power and strength. Tell your Father every time you hear the enemy lie to you about perfection! Whatever your weakness, struggle, or behavior, whatever your beliefs about yourself might be, God wants you to believe one thing wholeheartedly: He didn’t create you to be perfect. He created you to fulfill a purpose. Your eating disorder nor your addiction is not helping you to do that, no matter what the devil is telling you. Let GOD be your power today. Let God show you HIS strength over the enemy today. Give it to God.
