James 5: 13- 16: “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

While I was in treatment, I was always surprised to hear from others that the most important people in their lives didn’t know that they were struggling. That their best friends didn’t know where they were everyday, or that they hadn’t even told them. The main reasons were that they were embarrassed, or they didn’t want the accountability that telling others brings.

In this passage in James, it says that if you are sick (and let me be VERY clear.. You are sick if you are struggling with an eating disorder, anxiety or depression. Sickness in your mind, a mental illness, qualifies!) you need to call upon others to pray over you.

If you have sinned, you will be forgiven. Listening to the devil in your mind, putting faith in fear instead of in the Father, and continually choosing to do the wrong thing are all sins. It literally tells us then to confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. Telling your sins to someone else is so hard. I know. I’ve been there. I’ve had to confess my thoughts about myself, about others, and about food, to many people around me too. It’s scary. Worrying about how others are going to judge you though is the wrong thing to be worrying about. Right now, you need to be worrying about staying alive, getting to recovery, and living out God’s purpose in your life!

You know what I have found out though? All of the people I’ve talked to have had bad thoughts about themselves and about others. No one has ever said to me ‘I’m not going to be your friend anymore’ or ‘I don’t love you anymore’. Not one. And your true friends, your true support system, they are not going to leave you either. What they are going to do is pray for you. They are also going to call you out when necessary. And they are going to be there with you on this recovery journey.

I encourage you today, if you are one of the ones hiding behind shame, embarrassment, or fear of getting better, to reach out to one person. One person that you think you can trust, who will pray with you for healing, who will be there for you. Healing comes with confession. Healing comes with prayer. And healing comes with support.

Set yourself up right for true healing today. Ask your person to check on you. They will. Because there are people in this world that love you and care about you. And once you are healed, they will still love you and care about you.
