Isaiah 40: 31- “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint.”
In treatment, you get told 1000 times how important your support system is. But in case you haven’t heard, a support system is a person, or a small group of people, who are there for you when you are struggling, when you are doing well, or when you just need any type of support. They will celebrate with you, and cry with you. They will check on you.
Support Systems are very important to someone with anxiety, depression or an eating disorder. Is God in your support system? When you are having a bad day, is He the first one you turn to, or is it a human being? When you’ve had a good day, do you praise Him and celebrate with Him as well as the other people in your tribe?
God wants to be there for you in the good times and the bad times. God desperately wants to be the first one that you turn to. He wants to be part of your tribe. Have you let God into your support system yet? If not, ask yourself why. Is it because you are embarrassed? Feel like a failure? Or maybe you only want to come to God when things are good?
Today, know that God is there with you through all of it. The good days and the hard days. And He wants to be #1 in your support system. I urge you to let Him in, and let Him help and heal you.
So, how do you let God into your support system?
#1- Come to God Daily in Prayer. God is the first person that I talk to most days! I thank Him for my blessings, I talk to him about my worries. I pray for family and friends. Not only does this start your day out by talking to the most important being in the universe, it puts you in the right frame of mind for the day- thankful.
#2- Affirmations- Hear me out. Affirmations are WONDERFUL! They help us to remember the important things in life. Affirmations about God’s love for you, God’s protection over you, and your worthiness on this earth are so important in changing your thoughts towards more positive ones instead of thoughts laced with anxiety, sadness and fear. A few affirmations that I like to say before I even start my day: “God loves me, God protects me, God hears me. I am worthy of life today because I am God’s child”
#3- Recognize when you are struggling- Instead of pushing God away when you are struggling, cling to Him. When you feel that emotion creep up (you know the one!) ask God right in that moment to help you fight. Right then, remind yourself that He is with you and cares. Recognizing that you are NOT ALONE in this battle will help you know that you will win, no matter what.
I hope that this helped you to realize how important God is in your recovery battle. Because daily, I know it is a battle. Labeling it anything else would diminish it’s stronghold in our lives. But battling with God will start to release that stronghold that the enemy has made in your mind. Slowly, over time, the battles will start getting easier. Just hold on. Just keep fighting.
