Genesis 18:12-15- “So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything to hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
I’ll have to admit, when I read this, I laughed. I laughed because I am such a Sarah. God tells me to do something and I reply in a similar way, ‘Me? Oh goodness, you’ve picked the wrong person. You want to give this to me now? Look at what I have Lord, I’m not qualified for this.’
Have you thought something similar when God has told you to do something, or told you what He wants for you? God told me for a long time ‘Start a devotional blog,’ and I laughed. Me? What could I possibly have to say that others haven’t said already? What’s so special about my story?
Believing in the possibility that something can happen in your life when you have completely written in off as unattainable is where the Lord works miracles. It’s where He shows His power, His strength and His follow through on promises that He has made in your life.
When things look bad, and they look like they are not going to work out, hold onto your hat, because the Lord is about to step in if it is meant for you. God dosen’t give out promises, callings and purpose willy-nilly. God meets you in the situation that you are in. God knows everything about you- your entire story of being. He knows what you are qualified for SO much better than you do.
We see situations at face value so much of the time. We have so many excuses ready to go when God gives us that calling or purpose. ‘God I can’t do that because ______.’ ‘God, I’m not good enough at ________.’
Here’s the deal- no one starts out as good at anything. Knowing that and starting anyway is where success is.
Sarah didn’t believe that she was qualified in any way to be a mother. She was old, her husband was old- she didn’t think it was possible. But God said that it was. God promised her husband children with her. And God didn’t drop that promise because of what she thought about herself.
The next time God gives you a purpose, or tells you to do something and you want to laugh because you think it’s too hard or you’re not enough, look back at Sarah’s example. God is saying the same thing to you today ‘Is anything too hard for the Lord?’ Nope. Not one thing is too hard for the Lord. Not one situation is too hard for the Lord to overcome. Not one circumstance is too much for Him.
What calling or instruction has God given you that you have stepped away from because you think that you are unqualified? Have you laughed at God’s plan for your life too, like Sarah did? I pray that you go to God with your concerns, and then pray for help with overcoming your fears about your purpose. You’ll notice that even though Sarah laughed, God didn’t stop what His plan was for her life. Her purpose was still fulfilled.
Trust God with the purpose that He has given you. Take it to Him daily and ask Him what He wants you to do with it. You’ll be amazed at the guidance that He will give you.
