1 John 3:18- “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”
“Oh I LOVE that dress!” is a common comment that I see on Instagram. As a ‘wanna be’ influencer (shameless plug- follow me @heightsinheelsstyle) I see this, and similar comments a lot. However, those comments are rarely followed up by people actually purchasing the product from the influencer.
We can say that we ‘love’ something, but how often do we follow that ‘love’ up with action. Love is a verb that is thrown around so reguraly that in some contexts it has lost its true meaning.
Love is SO powerful that it is self-sacrificing. The Bible explains love so purely in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. “- 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Now I have a hard question for you. Do you love yourself like this? These words are often used in weddings, and we are called to love our spouses like this. We are called to love our children, neighbors and enemies like this. God’s greatest commandment for us is to LOVE.
But can we really love others when we speak self hate, self loathing, and low self-worth over our own bodies and mind?
No.
Are you patient with yourself and your body as it learns to accept recovery? Are you patient with yourself as you learn to live life again? Or are you easily frustrated and condemn yourself for it?
Are you kind to the wonderful and beautiful body that God made? Or do you constantly restrict food? Or speak ill of it? Or call it ugly or not enough?
Do you compare yourself to others; degrading yourself for the things that you are not instead of rejoicing in all of the things that you are?
Do you easily get angry at yourself for not being the ‘perfect’ version of yourself that you see in your mind but can’t see come to fruition in front of a mirror?
We have to love ourselves too. We have to start pouring love into ourselves. And that starts with our thoughts. Our thoughts control SO MUCH of what we do throughout the day. And when we don’t love ourselves the enemy has a really easy way to slip in and get a strong hold. The enemy convinces us to not love ourselves. Out of that comes a low self-confidence and maybe even self-loathing. When we feel that way about ourselves, how can we truly love others the way that God wants us too? How can we bring others up when we are so down on ourselves?
It is NOT vain to love yourself. It is not a BAD THING to love yourself. Loving yourself is a good thing. Because from that self-love with spring self-confidence, self-worth and power. And from that power you can move mountains with God! From that power you can help other women see that it is okay to be confident! It is okay to think that you are beautiful and wonderful! It is okay to feel great about yourself.
As women, we feel like we constantly have to ‘fix’ something about our body or ourselves. But the truth is that we don’t. We were made BY GOD for a purpose. As long as we are striving for that purpose with our eyes are fixed solely on God, trusting Him, putting our purpose in HIS hands, then we are GREAT! We are wonderful!
And girls…. it’s okay to be wonderful. It’s okay to think that you are beautifully and wonderfully made. It is okay to love the person that God created you to be. Don’t let the world ever tell you that those things aren’t okay, or that you need to be fixed. With Jesus as your savior and God directing your path, there is no fixing to be done.
Love you. Love your purpose. Love your beautiful body and mind.
